- How often should I get my teeth cleaned?
Preventive treatment recommendations vary based on the condition of your mouth, your home care, cavity (caries) risk and dental health habits .
For patients with existing conditions such as untreated cavities, gum disease, root exposure, frequent new cavities, we recommend more frequent visits to our office than patients with healthy mouths and few restorations.
'At risk' patients should be coming in every 3-4 months to minimize further damage.
Patients with healthy smiles should be visiting the office every 6 months.
- What if my insurance only covers cleanings every 9 months?
Insurance policies differ however, the ‘9 month rule’ most often refers to how frequently you can have a ‘recall examination, polish and fluoride’.
This does not does not restrict having your teeth cleaned.
Cleaning refers to ‘scraping’ or scaling/root planing, which is the removal of the deposit and stain from your teeth. Cleaning helps prevent gum tissue from becoming irritated and bleeding.
